Cassandra Jenkins: An Overview On Phenomenal Nature – album a New York-i gitáros-énekesnőtől

A születése óta New York-i, de a Gram Parsons-féle Cosmic American Music koncepció bűvöletében a contry-folk hatásoknak is nagy teret adó dalszerző-gitáros-énekesnő a 2017-es Play Till You Win debütalbuma után nem sokkal kezdett a National körébe tartozó szakállas multiinstrumentalista-producer Josh Kauffman társaságában dolgozni – közreműködtek a Hold Steady rockzenekar vezérének, Craig Finn-nek a 2019 elejére elkészült I Need A War szólóalbumán és annak tavaszi koncertjein is.

Cassandra a következő nagy kalandjaként a hatalmas kritikai sikert arató Purple Mountains albummal turnézhatott volna 2019 augusztus-szeptemberében, de az első fellépés előtt pár nappal a dalszerző-frontember David Berman öngyilkos lett. A gitáros-énekesnő egy norvégiai utazással próbált továbblépni, illetve azzal, hogy a szabaddá vált hónapjaiban új szerzeményeken kezdett dolgozni, hogy legyen friss repertoárja a novemberre már bejelentett következő szólókoncertjein (Craig Finn újabb amerikai turnéjának előzenekari posztján).

Az ekkoriban íródott, majd a zenész-producer Josh-sal és a szaxofonos-klarinétos Stuart Bogie-val – a Muzz és a Hold Steady albumán való közös munkáik között – formába öntött féltucat dal adja az alapját Cassandra Jenkins második nagylemezének, az An Overview On Phenomenal Nature-nek. A lemezcím az indiai szobrásznő Mrinalini Mukherjee (1949–2015) helyi tradíciókat és természeti összetevőket (például szárított kenderből készült fonatokat) modern művészeti irányzatokkal összepasszító életművének szentelt New York-i retrospektív kiállításra (Phenomenal Nature) és ott a teremőr nénivel folytatott beszélgetésre utal – amint ez a Hard Drive című csúcsdal spoken word nyitányából is kiderül.

A naplószerű dalok után zárásként a Central Park erdős madárparadicsom-területéről elnevezett – sétálós spoken word darabnak tervezett, de végül szöveg nélkül maradt – hétperces ambient szám (az utolsóként, már a járványhelyzet elején komponált The Ramble) következik a madarak hangjaival, ahogy a természet a kulcsdalok itt látható videóiban is kiemelt szerepet kap (a Crosshair egysnittes drónklipje most februárban készült a behavazott New Yorkban a Hudson folyó partján, a lemezborítót is jegyző Ole Brodersen norvég fotóművész Ambiguous Norway videója pedig télen mutatja azokat a tájakat, ahol az album elkezdett kicsírázni a tavalyelőtti nyáron).

A security guard stopped me to offer an overview on Phenomenal Nature

She went on for a while about our president
