A 2014-ben a legjobb tradicionális rhythm & blues előadóként Grammy-díjat nyerő fekete texasi gitáros-énekes Gary Clark Jr. – aki pengetett a Foo Fighters együttes Sonic Highways albumán, Austin City Limits tévéműsorában és Tom Petty előtt tisztelgő MusiCares-gálafellépésén, sőt Chuck Berry 2017-es búcsúlemezén is – a 35. születésnapját múlt hétvégén a Saturday Night Live műsorában ünnepelhette, ahol közelgő This Land albumáról játszotta a címadó klipdalt meg egy Prince-ízű számot (és előtte még egy újabb videót is bemutatott).
„Gary Clark Jr.-ban minden megvan” – nyilatkozta róla halála előtt Prince, és a texasi dalszerző-producer-gitáros-énekes ezt most meg is akarja mutatni új stúdióalbumán, melyen a stiláris eklektika jegyében a bluestól a punk-rockon és reggae-n át az epikus Prince-funkig mindent kipróbál, Quincy Jones. Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles és Cab Calloway hatását is emlegetve, ráadásul egy hangsúlyosan aktuális és politikus lemezt szeretett volna, ahol a szövegek is ugyanolyan fontosak, mint a hangok. A február 22-re bejelentett This Land album „Trump-országból” lentről délről tudósító címadó számának Savanah Leaf brit rendezőnővel forgatott kisfilmje már januárban a 2019-es év egyik instant klasszikusa lett, és a pont az SNL-fellépés előtti napra időzítve jött ki a másik közösen készített videójuk is a lemez What About Us című legfrissebb beharangozó dalához.
