John Grant: The Only Baby – tízperces dal monumentális Amerika-tablóval
A Czars nevű denveri együttes éléről 2010-ben szólópályára tért dalszerző-énekes John Grant legutóbb 2018-ban jelentkezett nagylemezekkel, a Creep Show nevű elektronikus szupergruppjával is (Mr Dynamite) és szólóban is (Love Is Magic), de az elmúlt három évben énekelt az izlandi Gus Gus legutóbbi albumán (Lies Are More Flexible), a brit Whyte Horses feldolgozásgyűjteményén (Hard Times) és az új Lost Horizons-lemezen is (In Quiet Moments). Közben tavaly Izlandon karanténozva egy saját új stúdióalbumot is felvett, amiről ma közzétett egy csaknem tízperces számot.
Az 52 éves meleg dalszerző-billentyűs-énekes egy múlt havi interjújában 2021 áprilisára lőtte be új albumát Boy From Michigan címmel (amivel saját magára utal, mivelhogy egy Buchanan nevű michigani kisvárosban született), de elmondása szerint a coloradói Denverben szerzett élményeiről és úgy általánosságban a világ jelenlegi állásáról is értekezik a lemezen, melynek hangzásához a 2001 – Űrodüsszeia című Stanley Kubrick-filmet hozta fel referenciapontként. A most közzétett The Only Baby című kilenc és fél perces dal, mely a walesi dalszerző-énekesnő Cate Le Bon produceri segédletével készült, a monumentális zenei ívével és kozmikus zárórészével tényleg illik is hivatkozási alapjához, de a szöveg lényegében egy Amerika-tabló az újvilágban az őslakosok földjének elrablásától a rabszolgák behozásán át a modern kapitalizmus gazdasági, politikai és ideológiai manipulációiig.

John az elmúlt napokban elszörnyedve figyelte az Egyesült Államokban zajló eseményeket, a Capitoliumba betörő tüntetőket és Donald Trump megnyilvánulásait, és úgy döntött, hogy még a hivatalos albumbejelentés előtti közzéteszi ezt a tavaly nyáron írt számot. A dalpremierhez fűzött kísérőszövegében pontosan ki is mondja, hogy dühének tárgya „a keresztény fasiszta jobboldal és persze T****, meg mindazok, akik pozícióba segítették és továbbra is ott szeretnék tartani Jézus és/vagy Hitler nevében.” A dalhoz a szöveges videót Casey Raymond készítette.
