Self Esteem – klipdalok a Slow Club-énekesnő új Prioritise Pleasure szólóalbumáról

Rebecca az önbecsülést hirdető Self Esteem projektnevet már a Slow Club fennállása alatt is használta egy szólódalához egy 2011-es promokislemezen (melynek B-oldalára Charles is készített egy szólófelvételt, Dalmatian álnév alatt), de csak a duó szétválása után engedte igazán szabadon színes popzenei énjét a biszex áthallásos 2017-es Your Wife klipdallal (ennek az első hivatalos Self Esteem-kislemeznek a társszerző-producere és kiadója a Django Django-frontember David Maclean volt) és a 2019-re elkészült Compliments Please albummal, melyen már Johan Hugo (M.I.A, Santigold, Bruno Mars, Miguel, Baaba Maal, Vampire Weekend, Mumford & Sons stb.) volt a fő zenei partnere.

Rebecca az experimentális popzenéjébe tanárnős Laurie Anderson-hatásokat is ügyesen tud illeszteni (ahogy a Moloko-énekesnő Róisín Murphy is tette saját tánczenéjében), a 2021. október 22-re Prioritise Pleasure címmel bejelentett második Self Esteem-nagylemezhez pedig „még nagyobb, szélesvásznúbb, filmszerűbb, gyomorba vágóbb” produkciót álmodott meg. „13 dal, amivel megtisztítom magam a bűntudattól és a félelemtől, hogy olyan nő vagyok, aki túl sok, és helyette inkább azt ünneplem, aki vagyok és akik vagytok, hogy embernek lenni nem mindig könnyű vagy nem mindig lehetsz tökéletes, és hogy ez rendben van. Elnézést kérek a szüleimtől a ‘ha borotválom a puncimat, azt csak magam miatt teszem‘ dalszövegsorért, de azt hiszem, ez a legfényesebb pillanatom!”

Az ominózus szöveg a Prioritise Pleasure album címadó dalában szerepel, melynek saját rendezésű táncklipjében az énekesnő a Madonna-féle 1990-es Blonde Ambition turné előtt tiszteleg, míg az I Do This All The Time című másik beharangozó szám spoken word verzéinek életvezetési tanácsaival a kilencvenes évek végi Baz Luhrmann-féle Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen) slágert idézi meg, csakhogy ő saját magát szólítja meg benne és saját magát öleli át az önszeretet üzenetével. „Ez a dal egy szélesvásznú mantra, mely arra emlékeztet, hogy önmagamat helyezzem az első helyre, és ezzel jobb és jobban jelen lévő emberré tegyem magam. . . egy kis akaraterővel (meg azzal, hogy rengeteg dalt írok róla), végül már nemcsak látom az előnyöket, de aktívan élvezni is tudom is azokat.”
