Sufjan Stevens: America – 12 perces protest song +FRISSÍTÉS: My Rajneesh – tízperces B-oldalas szám

Az 1975-ös születésű Sufjan – aki a Naprendszerről szóló 2017-es Planetarium konceptlemezt Nico Muhlyval és a National-tag Bryce Dessnerrel, a 2019-es The Decalogue balettzenét Timo Andresszel, az idén márciusban kiadott Aporia című  instrumentális new age albumot pedig nevelőapjával, Lowell Bramsszal közösen jegyezte – szeptember 25-re ígéri The Ascension című új sorlemezét, mely elmondása szerint „felhívás arra, hogy változtassunk magunkon és ne hódoljunk be a minket körülvevő rendszernek!”

Az extravagáns dalnok a 2000-es évtized közepén arról beszélt, hogy USA mind az ötven államáról fog egy-egy albumot írni, de a szülőföldjéről szóló 2003-as Greetings From Michigan – The Great Lake State és a 2005. július 4-én megjelent Sufjan Stevens Invites You To: Come On Feel the ILLINOISE után idővel kiderült, hogy ezt nem gondolta komolyan. A most közzétett America című dal visszautal korai karrierjének erre a patrióta gesztusára, de az eltelt tizenvalahány év alatt igencsak megváltozott világban jóval kritikusabb hangvételt üt meg. A leginkább meglepő, hogy ez nem is egy friss szerzemény, hanem még az öt évvel ezelőtti Carrie & Lowell lemez idején született.

„Meghökkentem ettől a daltól, mikor először megírtam. Merthogy kissé rosszindulatúnak éreztem, és nagyon távol állt a Carrie & Lowell összes többi számától. Szóval dobozban maradt. De amikor néhány évvel később előkerestem a demót, megdöbbentem, hogy mennyire előrelátó volt. Már nem tudtam mérges tirádaként félresöpörni. Ez a dal tisztán artikulált valami profetikus és igaz dolgot, még ha annak idején nem is tudtam azonosulni vele. Ekkorra viszont már tisztán láttam, merre kell továbbhaladnom” –  mondja Stevens a 12 perces kompozícióról, mely záródalként jelölte ki az új album irányvonalát.
